History of Broadmoor

Broadmoor is a neighborhood found in some of the lowest lying ground in the city. It was actually swampland until the early 1900s. Many recognized it as a popular place to fish before it became a neighborhood.

A drainage system was added in the late 19th century, which helped to handle some of the flooding. This drainage system was expanded to Broadmoor and the land was drained for homes to be built.

The first homes built in the area were high-raised houses, which is a trend that's coming back due to Hurricane Katrina. This helped with the fear of flooding when the neighborhood was first established.

After Hurricane Katrina, Broadmoor was almost turned into parkland. However, residents were not happy about this plan. Instead, many homes have been raised to help protect them from flooding.
